Below, you'll find answers to the following topics:

  • When to consider home remedies, and when to go straight to the vet.
  • How to help your dog vomit as comfortably as possible.
  • A list of home remedies to help sooth a nauseous dog.
  • How to check your pet for signs of dehydration.
  • A list of possible reasons your dog might be sick.
  • Causes that require immediate veterinary care.
  • What to do if your dog vomits white foam, saliva, yellow bile, or yellow foam.

When to Consider Home Remedies for a Dog That Is Vomiting

If your dog is throwing up, the first thing you should do is assess whether this is really something you can take care of at home. There are some causes of dog vomiting or nausea that you can treat yourself, but some causes are quite serious and will require a trip to the veterinarian.

If your dog is otherwise healthy, and you strongly believe that the vomiting is due to overeating or an abrupt diet change, then it is reasonable to try some natural at-home treatments.

When to Use Home Remedies

  • Your dog vomited once or twice
  • The vomiting is not progressing rapidly
  • Your dog is still bright and alert

When Not to Use Home Remedies and Go Straight to the Vet

  • Your dog is repeatedly vomiting or attempting to vomit (even if nothing is brought up)
  • Your pup is acting lethargic
  • There is blood in the stool or profuse, watery diarrhea
  • Excessive drooling
  • Your dog won't eat or drink (lacks an appetite)
  • You have a senior dog
  • You have a pet that is already suffering from another illness and doesn't have the strength to handle a normal bout of vomiting

In these cases, seek your vet's advice immediately.

Dog Vomiting Treatment: How to Help Your Pet Get Through It

When I worked at an animal hospital, I learned about some home remedies that can give relief to vomiting dogs. While they are mostly effective, these home remedies may not work for all dogs, and, in some instances, veterinarian attention is required to solve the problem.

Follow these steps to treat your vomiting dog at home:

  1. Fast your dog. This will give his gastrointestinal tract some rest and time to recover. With food out of the way, there should be less vomiting. If the dog vomits yellow bile, it simply means the dog is vomiting on an empty stomach. Usually, a 24-hour fast is necessary for adult dogs, while puppies should not be fasted for more than 12 hours.
  2. Feed your dog a bland diet. After the fasting period, when the vomiting should have ceased, take away his normal food and replace with boiled chicken and rice or boiled ground beef and rice. If you use chicken, make sure it is skinless and boneless; if you use burger, make sure the fat is drained off. Either way, rice should make up the bulk of the meal—the meat is just there to make it enticing for the dog. Keep giving this diet until the dog gets better. Then, over the next few days, gradually reintroduce his regular food.
  3. Provide ice chips. It is very important that your pet stays hydrated during this time. If your dog cannot keep water down, offer ice chips, which are less likely to trigger more vomiting. You can try to offer water later. If your dog goes for 24 hours without drinking water or eating ice chips, see the vet immediately.
  4. Check the gums. Have him seen immediately if his gums turn pale, whitish, grayish, or purple. A normal gum color should be a healthy bubble-gum pink. Press your finger on his gum; the finger mark should turn whitish and then pink again. If the gum takes a few seconds to turn back to pink, the dog needs to be seen as soon as possible. It could be a sign of anemia, poison, or bloat.

Home Remedies for Vomiting in Dogs

You may be wondering what you can give your dog for vomiting. The following remedies can relieve an upset stomach, but if symptoms persist, discontinue treatment and see a vet immediately.

  1. Pepto-Bismol: Ask your vet if you can try to give over-the-counter Pepto-Bismol. If he agrees that it might help, he will give you dosing instructions. As with any medication, there may be side effects. Pepto contains aspirin, so do not give if your dog has an allergy to aspirin. Ask your vet first!
  2. Electrolytes: If your dog is able to keep liquids down, ask your local veterinary clinic on recommendations for rehydration. Make sure the electrolytes offered do not contain artificial sweetener such as xylitol.
  3. Probiotics: Probiotics for dogs are definitely great (if supplied by a veterinary manufacturing company). In addition to soothing your dog's tummy when he is nauseous, probiotics promote a healthy gut when taken on a daily basis. Purina Fortiflora is a popular product that is recommended and sold by vets.
  4. Ginger: Consider a pet-safe treat or tea that incorporates ginger. Ginger is thought to have an antiemetic effect by blocking the serotonin receptors in the gut that causes nausea. If you are considering feeding ginger in raw or powder form, refer to the correct dosages outlined by DogsNaturally.
  5. Slippery Elm Bark: This herbal remedy contains tannins that help reduce inflammation. It can soothe an upset stomach and relieve diarrhea and is also loaded with vitamins. Slippery elm bark should not be given to pregnant dogs or those taking medications.
  6. Massage: Your dog may enjoy a relaxing massage. Gently rub his stomach, but don't press. If this causes him to throw up even more, discontinue.

How to Check for Signs of Dehydration

  • To check for dehydration, gently pinch the skin on the dog's shoulder blade or back into a little tent shape.
  • If the "tent" collapses promptly, the dog is well hydrated.
  • If the "tent" stays up for a few seconds or longer, the dog needs immediate vet attention, including fluids given under the skin or intravenously.

Why Is My Dog Throwing Up?

  • Overeating or Eating Too Fast: If your dog throws up shortly after every meal, you should consider investing in a slow-feeder bowl. It is usually designed with a maze to help prevent your dog from taking big bites.
  • Stress: Find the cause of your dog's stress or anxiety and avoid those stressors as much as possible.
  • Motion Sickness: Roll down the windows and sit your dog facing forward during car rides. If this doesn't help, ask your vet for a prescription drug to reduce motion sickness. You can also try giving your dog ginger in pill form or treat form, but be sure to ask your vet for a recommendation. Also, try to limit food consumption before traveling.
  • Abrupt Diet Changes: This includes switching to a new dog food brand, food allergies, or food poisoning.
  • Serious Illness: See a list of serious causes below.

If any worrisome or out-of-the-ordinary symptoms arise along with the vomiting, do not hesitate to have your dog seen by a vet. More likely than not, it’s just a minor issue, but sometimes catching a minor issue will keep it from evolving into a more serious and costly problem. If you suspect a more serious condition is at play, listed below are the causes that call for an emergency trip to the vet.

Causes of Dog Vomiting That Require Veterinary Attention

  1. Parvo is a potentially deadly virus that can be commonly found in puppies, so if your pup has not been vaccinated or has not yet finished his vaccine series, consider this a possibility. Parvo causes vomiting, bloody diarrhea (often with a foul odor), lethargy, and loss of appetite.
  2. Pancreatis, or inflammation of the pancreas, may occur after eating a fatty meal. Dogs suffering from pancreatitis need to be fasted but also require vet attention.
  3. Gastroenteritis is another worrisome condition. Symptoms include vomiting, bloody diarrhea, loss of appetite, and lethargy. At times, the underlying cause may not be found.
  4. Intestinal blockage can occur if your dog has ingested a bone or a foreign object, such as a sock, a rock, or a corn on the cob. Symptoms include vomiting.
  5. Bloat is a sudden distension of the stomach. If your dog tries to vomit but is unable to, you may suspect bloat, especially if your dog is deep-chested with a swollen abdomen and he appears to be in distress. If the dog is unable to vomit, he may bring up thick saliva (as seen in the video below). Some causes of bloating include eating or drinking really fast, high-fiber diets, or strenuous physical activities.
  6. Food poisoning from eating something potentially toxic can certainly cause vomiting. Chocolate, onions, and grapes are some of the most dangerous foods for dogs to consume. If you have a pet that loves digging in the garbage, food poisoning is a likely cause.
  7. Kidney or liver disease can also cause your dog to throw up.
  8. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is often caused by allergies to foods, such as additives, preservatives, wheat, and lactose.
  9. Stomach Ulcers that are caused by plant intoxication (mushrooms, sago palm, etc.), pesticide or rodenticide toxicity, chemical poisoning, and heavy metal poisoning result in nausea, vomiting, and anemia.
  10. Parasites can be contracted through exposure to contaminated soil, water, feces, or food. Puppies usually get intestinal parasites through their mothers. Make sure your dog is up-to-date with all of his/her shots to prevent serious illnesses from occurring.

Behavior of a Dog With Bloat: Emergency Treatment Needed

Why Does My Dog Vomit White Foam or Saliva?

Owners may confuse an infection known as bordetella or "kennel cough" with vomiting because the dog may be gagging, bringing up mucus, or producing foamy fluids. Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection that spreads when dogs live or socialize together in close quarters, like a kennel or dog park.

Treatment for Kennel Cough

  • The cough should go away by itself within two to three weeks.
  • Antibiotics and cough medicine can be prescribed if the cough is bothersome to your dog.
  • As a form of prevention, schedule your dog for a regular bordetella vaccination.

Home Remedy for Kennel Cough

  • Give your dog one tablespoon of honey and one teaspoon of lemon juice mixed in warm water.
  • You can administer this mixture hourly.
  • If your dog has diabetes, avoid this remedy as the sugar in honey can be harmful.

Why Is My Dog Vomiting Yellow Bile or Yellow Foam?

If your dog vomits yellow fluid in the early morning or late at night, it is likely because he/she is going too long between meals. This is true for dogs that are fed only once a day.

Treatment

  • The solution to this kind of vomiting is not fasting, but the opposite. Reduce the time between meals. This means feeding your dog more frequently, but be sure to reduce the serving size to avoid overfeeding.
  • You can also give your dog a bedtime or early morning snack.

Questions & Answers

Question: My 5-month-old German shepherd puppy has been throwing up since Friday morning. It is now Sunday morning, and he is still throwing up. He will not eat. He drinks a little bit of water, and he is sleeping a lot more. He just throws up and I have seen blood, but I should note that his teeth are coming in. Should I just leave him alone and let him go through it?

Answer: It is always best to play it safe and see the vet in such a case. This has been going on for a while, and your puppy is not showing signs of getting better. He may be getting dehydrated as well, since he is drinking very little.

Question: Are artificial sweeteners poisonous to dogs? They are present in Cheerios, and my dog ate some out of my bowl.

Answer: Some artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs. Xylitol is very toxic to dogs, and the most worrisome of all. Stevia, erythritol and aspartame are less toxic, but not something you would want to feed your dog.

Question: My 3 or 4-year-old pitbull puppy hasn't eaten for two days and started vomiting on the second days. He looks skinny, and now it's just lying down and walks really slowly. I can see in his eyes that he looks sad. Normally he downs his food. What should I do? Should I be worried?

Answer: With the symptoms you are seeing a vet visit is in order. Any time a dog starts acting lethargic and has pale gums, abdominal pain, is passing blood in vomit, has prolonged appetite loss, walks with an arched back or has black feces, a vet should be seen.

Shravanthi, I am always concerned when dogs who had rawhide show the signs you are seeing. I would suggest a vet visit to rule out a possible blockage./dogs/Symptoms-of-intestinal...

However, there may be chances this may be just due to recent diet changes, so it's your call what to do. I would play it safe and see the vet.

I have a 2 month old Rottweiler puppy and he had loose stool 3 times and he puked twiced. He's done with his 2 shots. I'm little worried about his condition right now. Is it because of change in diet? I started to give him rawhide from 2 days ago

I have a 3 year old Pitt and he randomly started vomiting up large quantities of slime (I guess mucus). He immediately tries to eat it and he is not lethargic, is pooping regularly (not diarrhea) and is eating as well. My sister had a husky that does the same. I’ve taken him to the vet and the didn’t run any tests, just listened to the symptoms and gave him food to make him poop more to pass anything in his system and meds for nausea. I was told at first to bring him back in if it continued. Well, ran out of meds and guess what, it continued. So I called my vet to make an appointment and they said it wasn’t needed and would just refill the medicine and give me more cans of food. I don’t feel like my vet is any help. His gums are pink and he doesn’t seem to be in pain but I’m stressing about this so much and I feel like I’m getting no support from my vet who would rather keeps him on meds than run tests. Is this something that happens often? Is there anything I can do? I’m going to switch his food to blue diamond. My dad buys cheaper dog food which bothered my dogs stomach as a puppy but hasn’t bothered him in years but I’ve tried pumpkin for his stomach and fasting and I’m not sure what else to try.

My 8 year old female black lab x German Shepherd mix will start licking her lips excessively out of the blue. She salivates a lot, starts to pace and look disquieted. She has not gotten into anything, nothing has caused any stress or fright and otherwise before and after these episodes she is fine.

How can I help her through these occurrences? It really does happen totally at random and I hate to see her so uncomfortable.

Hi owners who have questions about their dog that are vomiting and dont want to eat or drink water. Please give your dog vaccination especially your puppies. Vaccination series helps a lot to prevent illness and viruses that may harm your dog because dogs are prone of illnesses and viruses. Mostly small dogs. So it woulf be the best if you give atleast 2 times of 5 in 1 followed by 6in1 then continue giving then 6in1 and anti rabbis yearly. Anti rabbis are not only meant for you to become safe from your dogs bite but their safetyness also from other dogs. And deworm atleast every 6 months.

DalelovesRescue on May 15, 2017:

Roxy, I am so sorry for the loss of your puppy. It's heartbreaking. Did you ever find out what happened? How long was she living with you? The reason I ask, especially being very active in the animal rescue community, is she may have had a medical condition that was not picked up on, or you not told by the breeder or place she came from. Many dogs sold in petstores come from puppy mills that are horrible. A reputable rescue cares for their dogs as if they were there own, sparing no costs for each animals health. I'm just sharing this with you because your pup may have had an underlying condition you weren't aware of, and it's important you don't blame yourself for the loss of your pup. They also like to eat objects (not food) you wouldn't even know unless you saw her do it. I feel bad for your loss and wanted to send my condolences and tell you it's not your fault. We all get upset when our pets are sick and the best thing to do (which you were doing) is get them to a vet. Just for all readers, www.petsbest.com & www.trupanion.com are the best places to get pet health insurance through my experience. I have 3 dogs and just lost my 4th dog to cancer. Pet insurance is the best money I've ever spent because I never have to worry about not being able to afford to have any of my dogs treated because of money issues. Sickness & accident policy is the way to go, most wellness policies costs are higher, and really sickness & accidents are what costs the most to treat, and the premium is lower. I hope this helps with info for others, and I hope if and when you're ready, don't give up on adopting a pup for your family. They bring us so much unconditional love, I can't imagine my home without them. Again, my sincere condolences to you and your family.

Adrienne Farricelli (author) on February 10, 2017:

Mike and Annie, you should see your vet in these cases. Mike, those symptoms can be a sign of a blockage if the pieces of wood are clogging the dog's digestive tract. Annie, any time a dog is lethargic and has no appetite along with the vomiting, he or she should see the vet.

Yellow foam is likely bile (stomach acid) it just means the stomach is empty. Since the vomiting doesn't seem to give signs of reducing, I would suggest taking her to the vet and see what is going on.

Should I take her to the vet now or wait a little longer to see if she gets better ? Also what could I give her? Please help!

Dominique, yes, I would take to the vet, especially because he is lethargic and vomiting 5 times in a small breed like yours and on top of that, being a puppy can quickly cause dehydration and complications.

My 10 month old Toy poodle has been puking white foam, not everyday, it could be once a month or twice, he eats and drinks just fine and doesn't puke after, and his breath smells putrid. I'm guessing it's due to his puking cause that's the only time his breath started to smell horrible.

I do believe he ate grass three days ago and we do give him purina bacon bites as treats several times a day. He ate a about 1/2 his food yesterday. Should I be concern or ride it out? He seems a little down.

Adrienne Farricelli (author) on May 08, 2016:

Please see your vet if your dog is not eating. Your puppy is young, so can get dehydrated quickly. It could also be a case of kennel cough if your dog is not really vomiting (no stomach contractions) but gagging as if something is stuck in the throat.

Natural Remedies for Sick Dog

Now that you have established that home remedies are the right choice for your sick dog let’s take a look at the best ones on offer.

1. Hemp Oil

If you are not exactly sure what hemp oil is, but you know that it has something to do with cannabis, you will be pleased to discover that hemp oil will not get your dog “high”. In fact, by choosing to give your dog a 100% organic hemp treat from ceebeedoo.com, your dog can enjoy all the benefits of hemp oil, including relief from nausea and the stimulation of appetite without any psychoactive effect.

Plus, by choosing doggy hemp treats rather than supplements or another way of taking hemp oil, your dog can enjoy the tasty flavour of the treats and start to enjoy their food again.

2. Ginger

Known for its ability to reduce feelings of nausea in pregnant women, ginger can have the exact same effect on dogs. Look for a pet-friendly ginger treat or tea that includes ginger and offer them to your dog in small and gradual amounts.

Ginger helps to combat sickness by actively blocking the serotonin receptors in the gut that cause nausea.

If you choose to give your dog ginger in its raw form, be sure to check out the correct dosage that is safe for the first to avoid making them even more ill.

3. Probiotics

While you may be aware that dairy can cause further upset to your dog’s digestion, probiotics or kefir can actually help to reduce any sickness or nausea that they are experiencing.

For those who don’t know, probiotics are a form of good bacteria that is needed for a healthy gut, aiding digestion and helping to boost the immune system. You can find probiotic powders and supplements for your dog online, but be warned, these can be a bit pricey.

4. Fasting

Fasting is arguably one of the most effective ways to stop your dog from vomiting, although they may not be too keen on the idea. If you have a puppy, it is advised to wait 12 hours before offering them food after vomiting. For adult dogs, you can wait a full 24 hours.

Symptoms of Upset Stomach in Dogs

The most common signs of upset stomach in dogs are diarrhea and vomiting. If your dog is nauseous, you may also see him eat grass to soothe his stomach or try to induce vomiting, says Jody Bearman, DVM at Anshen Veterinary Acupuncture, Madison, Wisconsin.

Watch for other signs of upset stomach in dogs, such as:

  • Decreased appetite or loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Drinking less water
  • Seeming depressed
  • Looking uncomfortable and stretching more often (like they are attempting a downward dog)
  • Gulping to combat reflux
  • Licking their lips, the air, or objects

When to Call Your Vet

Monitor your pup’s symptoms. If your dog is consistently uncomfortable, or if the signs worsen at any point, call your veterinarian.

  • Increasing discomfort
  • Vomiting or having an episode of diarrhea more than twice
  • Blood in their vomit or stool
  • Toy or other foreign objects in their vomit or stool
  • Weakness or collapse

These can all be signs of something more serious, including pancreatitis , stomach bloating, a severe allergic reaction, or internal parasites.

If you realize that your dog has eaten something he shouldn’t have—a plant, food, toy, or chemical—you should seek immediate veterinary care.

If your primary veterinarian is unavailable, call your local emergency veterinary hospital. They will be able to advise whether your pet needs to be seen or whether you can continue to monitor him at home.

You can also call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control hotline at 888-426-4435 for a fee. They can also determine a poison’s level of toxicity and recommended care for your dog.

What to do if My Dog’s Not Eating, but Drinking Water

In some cases, you may observe that your dog is keeping himself hydrated, but is avoiding his/her food. There could be different reasons for this problem and you can use the following home remedies to treat it.

Soothe Your Sick Dog’s Stomach

Dogs are curious creatures who love to investigate their environment and eat whatever they find. Unfortunately, this impulsive behavior can cause an upset stomach. Consequently, the dog may refuse to eat but will drink a lot of water. On most occasions, this is a mild gastrointestinal problem that can be cured with home remedies.

The best possible method to ensure that everything is fine is to check your dog’s stool. If there is any blood in it, there could be an emergency and you need to contact your vet. Similarly, if the vomiting and diarrhea do not subside by 24 hours, veterinary care is advised.

Otherwise, you can let the dog fast for a few hours and follow it up with a bland diet. The dog will recover on its own within a day or two.

Make Your Dog Comfortable

Dogs tend to get anxious when alone and may end up getting sick. Your puppy may refuse to eat if you leave them alone for the first time. You will need to train them to stay alone without getting depressed or seeking revenge by refusing to eat. This is an absolute necessity to make your puppy comfortable in your absence if your work fulltime.

Similarly, introducing a new pet in the family can also result in a negative reaction. The older dog may refuse to eat as a sign of protest until he/she accepts the new member. In addition to jealousy, fear can also be a factor if you have adopted a bigger breed. You can ease things up a little by feeding in independent bowls and giving importance to the older companion.

Treating Constipation

If your dog only eats dry food, constipation could be the reason why he/she is not eating. You can solve this problem by switching your canine onto a quality canned food for a few days. Since the wet food has more moisture, it’ll be easier for your dog’s bowels to move. Do consult your vet before choosing the commercial food to avoid any allergic reaction.

Another method to improve your pup’s digestion is to add more fiber to his/her diet. This will improve the bowel movement that will be useful in treating constipation. Similarly, increasing the amount of daily exercise can also help your dog to recover from this illness.

Change in your Pet’s Location

Sometimes, it can be difficult for us to get used to a new environment. Similarly, dogs also feel uncomfortable when they move to a different place and can take some time to adapt. During this phase, they may exhibit unusual behavior. The refusal to eat is one way of showing the discomfort.

5 BEST Dog Diarrhea Home Remedies

As a dog owner, one of the most difficult times is when your beloved pooch has diarrhea. Dogs get diarrhea for any number of reasons and most of the time you can treat it at home. I hope that these 5 Dog Diarrhea Home Remedies will help you get through this trying time!

My rescue pup, Roxie, was 10 months old when we got her from the Humane Society. Sadly, she had a rough life up until we got her, she had a skin allergy and was underweight.

The Humane Society warned us that Roxie might experience some diarrhea due to the change in environment. Oh boy, did she! I’ve owned dogs for many years, but until we bought Roxie home, I had no idea a dog could produce so much… well… poop!

We were patient with her, cleaned up the messes as they happened, and did our best to settle her in. It seems that Roxie’s upset stomach was the result of a few different factors: change in diet, change in environment, and medication. These are also the 3 most common causes of doggy stomach woes, so it’s no wonder she was unwell!

Within a few days, the watery diarrhea had stopped but Roxie still had very loose stools and had to go frequently. After checking with the vet that there was nothing seriously wrong, I looked for dog diarrhea home remedies to help her. Below are a few of the best that I found worked for her then, and since.
